Impetigo

Pharmacy First Impetigo Treatment

Impetigo is a common and highly contagious skin infection that responds well to prompt treatment. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our trained pharmacists can assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, provide prescription treatment without the need for a GP appointment.

What this service is for

This service supports patients presenting with symptoms of impetigo, such as red sores, blisters, or crusting—often around the nose or mouth. Following an assessment, our pharmacist may supply prescription medication to allow treatment to begin without delay.

Who it’s for

Pharmacy First impetigo treatment is suitable for children and adults with mild to moderate symptoms. It is particularly helpful for families seeking quick and convenient access to care. Patients with severe symptoms, widespread infection, or underlying health conditions may be referred to their GP for further assessment.

How it works

You will have a brief consultation with one of our pharmacists to review your symptoms. If appropriate, a prescription treatment—most commonly a topical antibiotic—may be supplied. You will receive clear instructions on how to use the medication and advice on reducing the risk of spreading the infection.

What to expect

With appropriate treatment, impetigo usually clears within 7 to 10 days. Good hygiene is essential, including avoiding contact with sores, washing hands regularly, and keeping the affected area clean. Our team will provide full aftercare guidance to support recovery and help prevent recurrence.
